Falsettos (NY)
FALSETTOS revolves around the life of a charming, intelligent, neurotic gay man named Marvin, his wife, his lover, his about-to-be-Bar-Mitzvahed son, their psychiatrist, and the lesbians next door. It’s a hilarious and achingly poignant look at the infinite possibilities that make up a modern family... and a beautiful reminder that love can tell a million stories.

The cast of this show alone is a reason to get up and go see this show asap. But the story is incredible as well. The show has everything - laugh out loud funny moments, and moments that left the whole audience in tears. Falsettos is not something to be missed!

I saw the original cast in 1993, and I knew and loved this great musical. What I saw last Tuesday night was out of this world in brilliance. Every cast member was perfect. The sets and staging fantastic. There were some fine details in this staging that I didn't remember from 1993, and they were quite brilliant. Needless to say the audience was transfixed and transported at the end of the show. The cast was perfect. All superb. Christian Borle gives a performance of total perfection. As do Andrew Rannells, Stephanie Block and really the entire cast. The young actor who plays Jason, Anthony Rosenthal is a "pro" as accomplished as the adult performers. One of the finest child actors of our day! This is a must-see and never-to-be-forgotten revival. Please see it and encourage everyone you know to see it.

I did not see the original production so I was intrigued to see it finally. It was so disappointing; the story and the score were boring, non-distinguished. The score was in the style of Sondheim but unmemorable. A question for the creators: When did Dad's lover become a hero to the son? After a baseball batting tip???? It may have been shocking and "avant-garde" in the past but now it is trivial.

I had read the New York Times review and was so excited to get my tickets to Falsettos. I was really excited about seeing all the featured actors on stage. Bottom line - just not a great play. First, anyone going should know it is basically an operetta. There are almost no spoken words in the play. This results in passages where they are singing about rather banal things like what food to have at a bar mitzvah, etc. It is long, feels as super dated as it is and the music just not great - no humming showtunes after this one! The performances are all strong and the actors quite likable and watchable. The jigsaw piece set, which gets moved all around and turned into different things, feels like a dated set of a bad 80's tv show. I am so sorry to say, but this show was a big disappointment

If you want to see a stage full of musical theater performers who are all the BEST at singing, dancing, and acting, then "Falsettos" is the show for you. Add to that a set that is so clever that it is a star all on its own, and you have a really entertaining evening. And then the entire show is an anthem to the "constructed families" that most of us in New York know so well - the friends that have become, in effect, a replacement for our childhood families.

Everything about this show was beyond terrific: the book,, the lyrics, the music, the acting, the direction, the choreography, the band. But, OMG bring Kleenex, The second act had the entire audience in tears, it was so moving. A grand theater experience - and unique.

It started out funny, most of first act, but as the show progressed, the storyline turned sad and emotional (second act) which isn't bad. However, the flow seemed slow at times and that made the show seem longer than necessary. I still enjoyed the show as I was glad to see the two main actors, Christian and Andrew and I would recommend the show. It is worth checking it out.

One of the great contemporary musicals. William Finn writes with humor and compassion and his music is always exciting. The show resonates more today than it originally did because we now have stepped back a little and moved ahead. Superb cast. Stephanie Block delivers an authentic showstopping number. Great staging (the backdrop looked a little tacky). It won Tonys for Book and Score originally...not best musical. The big "why not" question...wasn't marketable then. I hope to go again.

I had feared that Falsettos might come across as dated, but my fears were unfounded as the play's themes are truly timeless and universal. The music and lyrics are so beautiful and all of the actors were exceptional. I would hope that, barring another production coming out between now and the Tony nominations, this play would receive the Tony for Best Play Revival.

"Falsettos" was an absolutely beautifully composed, acted, directed, and designed musical that made you laugh, broke your heart, and lifted your spirits. Every moment was perfectly executed. The performances were awesome! Each actor was totally on his/her game! The score has been playing in my head for over 20 years, and this cast captured its essence with humor, sadness, and madness.

Saw Falsettos during previews and going to see again in December. I laughed a lot and cried a lot. Heard about it but wasn't entirely familiar with this show from the 90's not knowing what to expect going in. I absolutely LOVED EVERY SECOND of this show! The end of Act 2 is very sad! The songs are cleverly written and tunefully memorable. The cast is sublime and perfection in every way they interact with each other. Stephanie Block was amazing bringing down the house in "Breaking Down", wow! But the one person who I couldn't stop thinking about days after the show was Mendel, the psychiatrist played by Brandon Uranowitz. Great natural comedic timing WHILE HE SUNG HIS ENTIRE PART but also warm hearted in his neurotic, sweet portrayal of the nebbish family shrink and stepfather to Jason. Mendel literally stole the show! The little boy was excellent. Not over the top obnoxious and was very believable in a complicated role. Kudos! Oh, bring tissues!!!!!

Enjoyed this revival almost as much as the original production 25 years ago--the score is unforgettable, and the lyrics are smart. Terrific performances all around. Only drawback was the set design--while I get that the blocks are supposed to represent a family's building, breaking down, and reinventing their lives together, figuring out how the actors are going to juxtapose the blocks from scene to scene is distracting and breaks the momentum of the show. Still, it's been 4 days, and I'm still humming the music. Definitely see this production.

While the musical is almost three decades old, the story holds true today. The actors were all marvelous. The second act is especially touching. What annoys me is that I paid $225 for my ticket which I bought before the show opened and on the day of the performance, a better center seat was $149. This does not seem fair to me.

I was skeptical about the revival. I had seen so many dated revival. This show is not dated but carry by an amazing cast. Christian Borle and Andrew Rannells are two well known in the cast and they did a good job. The most surprising performance is from Betsy Wolfe. Her powerful voice and performance took the house down. The supporting cast is also very strong. The weakest link is the music which cannot not embed in my head. The music is not memorable. Fortunately, the storyline keeps the story flow. At the end of the show, heard so many sniffing and see tear in my eyes.

Trite, banal, cliche-ridden....what did we miss that the critics were over-impressed with...or was it merely that most of the cast lost its enthusiasm with a simply unenthusiastic book- to be fair, the musical production numbers and voices were excellent, but this is a "ready to close" show- MISS IT!

It's official: this is my favorite musical of all time (and I don't use phrases like that lightly). The story is so deeply moving and important, the music is brilliantly complex, and I rarely see such human characters on stage. This production's cast is truly Broadway's best and brightest stars, and the chemistry and love between them is palpable. In addition, I'd be very surprised if the set design doesn't get a Tony nomination this season. Unfortunately it only runs for a couple more weeks, so SEE IT IF YOU CAN, otherwise, make sure you tape it when it airs on PBS! (date not yet announced)

The cast is outstanding in every way. The show features one show-stopping number about breaking down that is truly one of those classic Broadway performances you never forget. It makes you wish the whole show could sustain that level and hit that high. Act I and Act II at times feel as if they are two different plays. In fact, I learned after the fact that that is because there were two different plays which were merged together. The music has some wonderful, unpredictable melodies and twists, but for me was a bit overly quirky and left me longing for a song where the lyrics were jammed in to capacity. Don't get me wrong, there is much to love about Falsettos. There are some great comic moments and stand-out performances. Show could win Best Revival of a Musical.

A friend of mine recommended this show to me. She had seen the original production in 1992 and said it was her absolute favorite so I bought the tickets back in August. Block is straight up amazing as Trina, and the rest of the cast is excellent too. I've been listening to the cast recording nonstop since I saw it. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I saw the original Falsettos in 1992 and a pre-Broadway production in Hartford,CT. This new production is fresh and fun and heartbreaking as it ever was. The cast is loaded with Tony winners and nominees. Christian Borle is very effective as Marvin, the man who wants it all, while Stephanie Block really shines in her comic number, I'm Breaking Down and the touching Holding to the Ground. Andrew Rannells is excellent as the pretty boy object of Marvin's affection. The rest of the cast is every bit as good as the headliners. Anthony Rosenthal, as Jason, the son of a broken marriage is extremely convincing and holds his own with the adults in the cast. The set is ingenious, being a large block, made up of smaller blocks that assemble in different configurations to represent furniture, walls, etc. and is moved by the cast members. The production is seamless, moves deftly from emotion to emotion and, when the lights come up, there's not a dry eye in the house . Bravo.

Meaningful and accurate portrayal of the story and the way in which lives intersect throughout love and loss. Tremendous in every way.

Not knowing much background about the musical, I bought tickets to see Andrew and Christian live - and they did not disapppoint! Watching the whole cast was fun and Stephanie performing I'm breaking down was amazing. Listening to them sing all their lines was a little different for me. But there was great chemistry and laughs and tears and glad I got to see!

You will laugh and cry at the same time. What a fresh production. I remember seeing the original production years ago and thought at the time that is was ground breaking. The new production is also ground breaking. The set was minimal but stunning. All the actors were in top form. It is so great to see a production that doesn't . have a TV star lead the show. If I have the chance I will go again. . A shame it is a limited run.

Falsettos' storyline and talented performers hit the mark, bringing out memories and a range of emotions. This fabulous show shared awareness of what it was like to experience certain aspects of the gay lifestyle in the '80s. The underlying heavy theme was led up to and counteracted by hilarious moments and personalities. I can't recommend this show enough!

From the first word of the first song I was insulted and outraged at the double whammy of gross anti-semitism and poor, tuneless songs in a stupid plot. The opening song: "Four Jews Bitching," was insulting and inappropriate to the rest of the show. Somewhere there was a line that said "We are a manipulating people." Outrageous and highly stereotyped. Song after song was without melody and flat with the possible exception of the song: "I Am Breaking Down<" which was delivered well, but could have been ramped up to be a real show stopper. It stood out because the rest of the show was so, so bad. I was shocked and surprised that the Lincoln Center Theater, to which I have been a member many, many years, would produce such an amateur production.

Had heard great things about this and love the lead actors. The musical has 2 acts. The first act was slow paced and musical numbers varied in quality . Second act much better. Wish it had been divided into three acts or shorter. Each act over 2 hours. We sat in mezzanine and the seats were very uncomfortable...not wide enough and no leg room. By end of act our whole party had back aches and cramped legs. Difficult to keep them there for second act especially when heard it would be 2 hours and 15 minutes long! Many numbers went too long and seemed very self indulgent.

I thought that the first act was a little slow in development. However, the second act momentum picked up. The cast members had beautiful voices. I was distracted by the minimal scenery for it was constantly in motion.

This play has tremendous heart and its sweetness is profound because it makes an important point about life and our obligations to one another as moral and humane people, notwithstanding our many flaws. It made me cry and it made me feel glad I was in the theatre being reminded of these important points. Go see it. There is only one song that isn't really good, and that is the first, so don't be discouraged at the beginning. It gets better and better. The actors are wonderful!

"Falsettos" is a classic contemporary American musical, and this revival is everything I could have hoped for. The direction (by co-author James Lapine) and cast (led by Christian Borle and Stephanie J Block) are impeccable, and even though ithe action of the story is set in 1979 and 1981, this is more than ever a musical for now. It is hilarious throughout, but ultimately one of the most moving stories in the contemporary musical theater canon. Go see it and be enriched!

In some ways, it's difficult to put into words my feelings about the Falsettos. It is a fun musical that is minimal in its production. Beneath the fun exterior is actually quite a dark story about the struggles a family faces when learning about infidelity. The stories are told (I think) exclusively through music so paying close attention to lyrics is important in getting a more in depth depiction of events. I've seen many musicals but this seemed like one of the few that had barely any dialogue. There are some bizarre but entertaining moments. Overall there is a good message about an unconventional family and how they can come together during challenging circumstances. I was just upset that Stephanie J. Block was not in the show when I went :(

Up until now, only one other play "Blood Brothers" touched a place so deep in my soul that I was changed after seeing it for the first time and continued to see it every year In London until it sadly closed three years ago. I will definitely see Falsettos many more times, being aware that it will touch a place of both pain and celebration that few things have. I expect to see different things, to hear different words, to feel different deep emotions each time I see it knowing that I have seen these things before. Go see it with an open mind and an open heart and allow yourself to be deeply moved and ultimately blessed by the truth this play so powerfully offers you.

This production had me laughing throughout the entire first act, and sobbing through the second. The actors' connection with one another was clear. It was aesthically pleasing as far as set design and ground plan as well.

Maybe this was a new and vibrant play in 1991, but it need not have been revived. An irritating cast sing monotonous songs in a flat voices with harmonies that are simplistic and repetitive. An ingenious set works very well and "Breaking Down" was clever but felt manipulative. Can't comment on act two since we left at intermission with so many others.

This was a true ensemble cast with excellent performances from every one. I particularly adore Christian Borle and it was delightful to see him in this performance. The music was poignant as was the storyline. This show is more than about AIDS, it redefines relationships and commitments among family and friends.
