Million Dollar Quartet (Chicago)

Million Dollar Quartet (Chicago)

Hot on the heels of its Broadway run, rock and roll musical Million Dollar Quartet is on the road to tell the story of the fateful meeting between Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash at an impromptu jam session in December of 1956. The musical focuses on these newcomers before they became icons, gathered for a rare collaboration at Sun Studios in Memphis. The cast brilliantly portrays the original performers while playing each timeless track with perfection and ease. Million Dollar Quartet will have fans all shook up this summer with their red-hot 2014 tour dates.

This show is like a entertainment secret! A small simple stage only emphasizes the enormous talent of every person on the stage. If you love the music from the Sun Records era and you appreciate the talent of the the people on that label, you will love the dynamics of this show. There is nothing cheesy or Vegas about this show... For a good time, good music and real entertainment, this is your show.

To say it was phenomenal is an understatement! It was more than that! If you like Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and/or Jerry Lee Lewis you will love this musical! The only thing I didn't like a bout the experience is you couldn't take any pictures during the event.

A bit slow - I honestly expected more of a Wow. Jerry Lee Lewis character actor was terrific and Johnnty Cash was good. The back up drummer and cello player were very good. But the play overall was a bit too slow for me. And I love Broadway.

We were so impressed with this group of performers.....they are talented actors, but the fact that they can play and sing the songs of such well-know musical "legends" is just amazing! Sean Sullivan deserves a special mention for truly capturing the essence of Johnny Cash. Also, noone should overlook the talent of the drummer and the bass player...they keep a constant stream of music and accompaniment going throughout the show....really talented guys!! We also loved the way the "story" was put together around the event of the one evening, but also gives you a look back at each performer's history with Sun Records and uses the evening as a turning point for their futures beyond Sun. This was a great show and an awesome concert by stars who we never could have hoped to see perform together. We cannot recommend it highly enough!!!

The show was two hours of non stop happiness! It made me laugh and grin from ear to ear from the first moment to the last note! It was hard not to believe that I wasn't really watching Elvis, Jerry, Johnny, and Carl come alive! It was easy to see that the entire audience was taken back to 1956!

I've seen quite a few Broadway plays, but this one was unforgettable. Even if you aren't fond of the music of that era, the characters' talent will draw you in and have you dancing in the aisles by the end of the night! This is a show I would be more than happy to see a second and third time.

Singers were excellently matched to respective artists and story line though superficial fit well into play. Loved Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis and marveled how close Johnny Cash singer was to the real Johnny Cash (though he looked like Babe Ruth). CArl Perkins guitar playing was excellent as well. Still wondering how lady singer fit in though likley good for play, not original event.

To begin, the reason we went was beause a number of people recommended the show. I thought it was something my mother, who is in her 70's, would enjoy. Needless to say, what a fun show. Every single cast member was exceptional... the talent was second to none. They not only sang but played the musical instruments. There were 7 people in our group ages ranging from 32 - 75. Each one of us walked out of there and said we loved it. You don' t have to have grown up with this music, most of us have heard it and know the artists to appreciate the story. I wouldn't take a 7 year old, but a young adult I believe would enjoy it very much. The venue at Apollo is small. We sat center section in the 2nd to the last row (H). The seats were perfect. Last row in Section 3 looked like the perfect place also because those seats offered even more leg room. I would not sit in the far right or far left sections because some of the seats you would be looking at their backs. The 3 middle sections are great. I would see this show again.

We saw Million Dollar Quartet on Dec. 26 at 5 p.m. The Apollo Theater is a rather small venue so I would think that most seats provide a good view and sound quality. Our seats were center, up about 10 rows or so. The sound was so loud, I regret not taking my earplugs. But the show was very good. The Jerry Lee Lewis singer was funny and a hot piano player. The Carl Lewis guitar player was fantastic, playing with power and precision. Elvis looked, moved and sounded entertaining. These three were so energetic. Johnny Cash had a powerful, deep voice. I would recommend the show, and thought the price was reasonable for the evening.

I took my 14 and 11 year old to the Apollo Theater performance in Chicago. Both girls were less than excited to see a musical set in the 50's. The venue was intimate and the performance electrifying!! Both girls were slouching in their seats and I had to laugh when they both sat upright, about five minutes into the performance!! Although they did not stand up and sing/clap with the, "uncool older people," both girls loved the performance! They have been talking about it non-stop, and absolutely LOVED the singing, instruments and story line. Their favorite character was Jerry Lee Lewis, his piano playing and craziness. I was also impressed that the actors who played Johnny Cash and Elvis, took the time after our show for photographs with the girls!! Overall, the night was an unforgettable performance and a music history lesson for a much younger generation!!!

This was my 2nd trip to Million Dollar Quartet stage- I loved the show. The theater venue is a bit strange as I passed it three times on the street before I realized it was the theater. They should figure out a way to put huge banners or lights or make the outside LOOK more like a theater. The woman who played Elvis's girlfriend..( the only woman in the play) was really not a good actress. She seemed very much NOT present. I saw her lip syncing, poorly. She didn't seem on que - just didn't do a great job and took away from the show, in my opinion

This is my first time watching musical performance in US. The actors are amazing. They are talented and full of passion! Just one little disappointment is that as a non-native English speaker, I can hardly listen what they were saying about while they are not singing. I am not sure if it is because they are using old words or they are speaking too fast. Anyway, luckily the songs are very nice, so I still enjoyed the performance.

I have seen "Million Dollar Quartet 3 times at the Apollo Theater in Chicago so I am a tough critic! Show was really great, much better than I expected! No one will ever match Lance Lipinski as Jerry Lee in the Chicago production but John Countryman added a different dimension to the role. The best performance is Lee Ferris as Carl Perkins! It is a very demanding role and he was really wonderful and even looked the part. The weakest acting was Scott Moreau. His singing was wonderful but his acting was very stiff with a really bad wig! Tyler Hunter great as Elvis but too short! I have never seen a tall Elvis in any performance I have seen! Vince Nappo very entertaining energetic as Sam Phillips Very entertaining show and I highly recommend it!

Supurb perforamce and supurb theater! Everything was perfect. the drive, the parking (only 12$) easy in and easy out, and the seats were big a comfy. Snacks and drinks were allowed ( which was nice). A very nice, small theater, the ambiance was really nice. The perfomace was outstanding! People were on their feet clapping and dancing during the end which is where the performace really lit up the performace. I couldnt believe that the 90 minute show was already over. Having been stationed with Johnny Cash when I was in the Air Force and having been to Elvis's home in Bad Neuheim and having been to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville many time, as a lover of country music let me say this.... the musical performances were on the money and the story line was about as close to true as possible. My only criticism is that the guy who played Elvis whether singing or talking was constantly twitching his leg; something Elvis did not do except when he was singing. So I suggest he lightens up on the leg shake. I've seen the show 7 times and I will see it again.

You know the music. Some of us remember it when it was a New Release, and many others heard it on the Oldies station. But, there was so much more to the story of the day that these four legends of Rock 'n Roll were brought together at Sun Records. Thanks to Sam Phillips, the music was recorded and one snapshot was taken. The Apollo Theater is small enough to make you feel like you are right in recording studio with them. The music big enough to fill a stadium. The plot moves from performances to flashbacks perfectly. There is plenty of history that will surprise you. Each actor portrays his character convincingly. They play the instruments, sing and go through all the motions that you would expect to see if you were at a concert back in the 50's. The T-Shirt says "I Was There" and I believe it sums it up perfectly. Did I love it? I'm still grinning days later!

Absolutely LUV'ed Million Dollar Quartet...still toe tapping and humming the tunes. Theater was intimate and actors/musicians were excellant. My onlky regret was the Sunday mantinee audience......they were DEAD. We were rock'in, hoot'in and jamm'in and they were all in a "polite applause" mode. I want to go back on a Thursday or Friday night with folks that appreciate Rock and Roll.

Million Dollar Quartet is the only show worth watching on Broadway right now. Its the only one with a sense of originality. Its not some rehashed garbage that came from a cartoon nor is some over acted broadway non-sense, nor a re-release of an older hit. It boldly broke with the norm, a huge gamble and a big pay off! Awesome job of the actors to both act and perform at such a high level!!! In all actuality, its not a broadway show at all. It's really more of a incredibly well done 50's themed concert performed by 1st class musican/actors that's on Broadway. Each actor did an amazingly well done job of resurrecting the spirit of Cash, Perkins, Presely, and especially Jerry Lee! If you are looking for more of a real broadway show, this may not be for you, but if you are looking for an incredibly well done show, then this IS for you.!

I still thought that it was a musical of a wonderful content though I did not know well with Elvis's fan excluding him. Even I who did not understand English well was able to be amused without embarrassing it. Even how to talk, how to move, how to sing, and how for Elvis to stand were researched well, and it seemed to be there Elvis. I wanted to see by all means again when there was a chance. And, I want to study other singers' things at that time.

We have seen it already and decided to take out our colleagues the second time around. They enjoyed it tremendously. A second time for us and we still loved it ;-} My favorite part was "Whole Lotta Shaken Go In On" and "Great Balls of Fire" the cast brings the actual stars alive every time! Looking to go again for a third time with a couple of friends ;-}

Love story line and musical score to play, very true to life. All the characters were right on target with Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash.

The show followed the actual events pretty well......all actors were very talented.....Jerry Lee Lewis was probabaly the best, although the actor who played Elvis Presly was excellent. In addition to sounding like Elvis, he had very similar manner-isms, etc... Johnny Cash was probabably the weakest act, although he performed well. All-in-all, it was a great time had by all.

This was an entertaining production from beginning to end. Tim Decker (Sam Phillips) is wonderful and capably carries the narrative of the show. The real fun of this show is the music, and I have to say the quality of the sound and the performances were absolutely outstanding. All the actors play their instruments and sing, and they are fantastic. They don't ape the original recordings but simply sound great on every song. Lance Lipinsky as Jerry Lee Lewis steals the show. David Lago's Elvis is also a joy to see. The final signature performance of each to the Million Dollar Quartet had the whole theater on its feet.

I took my husband to the show for this birthday and he is not generally a fan of broadway shows. He was hesistant about going but was very pleasantly surprised and amazed with the production. He is ready to go again and recommends it to everyone. He was able to take a picture with the gentleman playing Johnny Cash, Lance Guest and that really made his day. We had a great time and will be going to see it again real soon. We recommend this to anyone who wants to see an amazing cast put on a great performance. They are all extremely talented and gifted musicians/actors!!

What an amazing musical show. From the first song until the last I couldn't stop my feet and hands from keeping beat to the music. If I have an opportunity, I would go see it again!

You sometimes think that a mid week matinee may not have the artist's full effort. Not with this performance! The understudy played Elvis so convincingly, that you wondered how the usual artist could have done better. Have wanted to see this for years, but the distance and location held us back. The venue is intimate and well worth the trip from the Southwest suburbs; even if the rush hour traffic home was a nightmare. We would do this again. The staff who work at this theater are warm and welcoming. The woman from the box office even came out to assist us with parking since we were early for the valet. To describe in one word: WONDERFUL.

I had been waiting a long time to see this show, and the announcement that it was closing in January motivated me to finally do it. The talent on stage was mostly excellent - and really captured the mannerisms and style of the legendary personalities they took on. The musicians who played Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins were simply superb. Kudos to the supporting cast - the female vocalist and gents playing bass and drums were outstanding. The fellow who played the record producer was top notch as well. Only weak point: sound. The louds were too loud, and levels during the soft parts (e.g. regular dialogue) was way too low.
