Having seen last year's show several times I am not sure if this year's is better, but it is different. What I am sure of, is that Viva is good fun, and most visitors will be entertained by the song and dance. An outdoor venue brings some inherent issues. Weather can spoil the show, or cause a cancellation, which can be a heartbreaker for out-of-town visitors. The acoustics can be influenced by wind, etc. The variety of dances will entertain most lovers of the arts.

In the 32 years of its existence, my husband and I have missed only one season of "Viva El Paso"--when we were on an extended trip. This summer's offering ranks among the top five. The dances continue to be the best we've seen in any outdoor musical, highlighted by the colorful and exciting folklorico presentations, and the choral music is stronger and more melodious than in any season I can remember. The updates for this season retained the best of comedy, local references, and solos, while infusing enough new material to keep the show fresh. The low points continue to be the dances from the frontier era, which pale in comparison to those of the mythhology and mestizo segments. This is a show that will be enjoyed by all but the youngest, squirmy members of the family season after season.

This is a must see. The venue is excellent, pre-show dining, beautiful view. Just that alone is worth the trip. The show; well all I have to say, is BRAVO. What a talented group of performers, with NON-Stop energy. The performers and sets were as good as any theater; in Chicago or New York. OH; sorry EL Paso is 100 times better. What a testimony to the wonderful talent and diverse cultural we have in El Paso. To the Viva Staff; when does the Video go on sale? Blessings to the Viva Team, Can't wait till next year. Note: Bring a seat cushion!!!

I was impressed by the dancing and the costumes. The entire event was wonderful and the setting was terrific. Some of the singing could have been a little better, but this did not really detract from the event.

This show was incredibly disappointing. Having moved away from El Paso when I was 18, my annual visits, become a week long adventure of doing things from my childhood. This year I dragged my family to Viva El Paso.... the story line was sappy and drawn out... and very heavy on the Mexican heritage. While I love the Mexican traditions and the Mexican people that I grew up with, not all people from El Paso are Mexican. The acting was brutal..... as was the actual script..... the male dancers were pretty good though... that was impressive. All in all, it was too long, it dragged out, and the was performance lackluster. Stay home this year!

Viva El Paso is an entertaining presentation of El Paso's History. There is lots of dancing, singing, and beautiful costumes. Viva El Paso is performed at McKelligon Canyon Theatre which is outdoors. The view of the mountain at the back of the stage is beautiful! I grew up in El Paso and had been to Viva El Paso around 20 years ago. My understanding is that Viva El Paso is under different management than it was 20 years ago. I must say that although it was much better 20 years ago, it is still worth seeing. The first half of the show was a bit slow, but the enthusiasm and excitement finally picked up in the second half. Viva El Paso has great performances of numerous Mexican dances. That alone is worth seeing. I would recommend for anyone to see Viva El Paso at least once in their lifetime.

It was definitely worth the money. And for things to do in El Paso, this one hits top 5. I would recommend this to anyone. Its comical, musical, and unforgettable. And it doesnt matter where you sit, anywhere gets you a good view, all the seats had a great view of the whole stage, no need to twist your head in a weird direction. You'll be fine sitting in the center, left, or right of the stage.

It is my second year viewing VIVA El Paso and it continues to be a worthwhile event to see. However, this year I need to advise those in charge of the event to review with their sound coordinator to improve on this asapect of the event. Sound would fade out or be interrupted on more than one person subtracting from the quality of the event. Otherwise, the organization and other aspects of an oudoor event such as this were excellent.

This presentation was very well done. It was my first time seeing it, but I know I want to see it again. My guest from Florida was so impressed with the dancing, singing and the El Paso history part of it. The cast are so professional and also very friendly after the show. Guys, keep up the fantastic work. PS: I WOULD LIKE TO SEE "VIVA EL PASO" ADVERTISED MORE IN AND AROUND FORT BLISS, SO THAT OUT- OF- TOWNERS CAN SEE THE GREAT TELENT WE HAVE HERE IN EL PASO.

I've been out of the country for the last 5 years, so I was looking forward to enjoy my own cultural history through music and dance. The costumes we're nice, colorful and really added to the musical. The story line did not flow well, it was difficult to follow. The dancers weren't as professional as times before, nor the singers . Everything was to busy,I'm sure to distract you from the whole story. I like that they added the history of John Hardy but disgraced Fort Bliss which happen to be the biggest supporter of the El Paso economy. Plus we have many soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan. Ft Bliss and White Sands area is 25% of what the Army controls or owns. Ft Bliss deserve more credit. ( No I'm not military.)

Viva El Paso is the best event to attend all year long ! The story of El Paso is told in a wonderful way that incorporates many dances. The costumes are beautiful and truly reflect their part of the story. The dancers are well trained and very professional. They absolutely convey the excitement of life in our border town. Their are moments of quiet during the dance and others so exciting , you want to get out of your seat!! My Mother was visiting during this time, and she enjoyed it so much!! it was her favorite activity of her entire trip. This production appeals to all ages. Little ones will be entranced by the music, dance and colorful costumes. I will go again before the season ends. All I have left to say is "VIVA EL PASO!!!!!!!"

Overall, I enjoyed the show and the storyline. The costumes were gorgeous and the use of the mountain as a part of the production was very impressive. The show seemed a little "high schoolish" at first. The dancers were slighly off the beat and the acting was stilted. As the show progressed, the cast seemed to get more in sync with each other and it flowed better. "Viva El Paso" is a unique way to educate and entertain locals and visitors with our special history. I'm glad I went.

The event was longer than in past years. That made for a really long drive home to Las Cruces. We took friends who had not attended before. We missed the traditional 'Viva!' with the horses, not so many long folklorico at the end of the second half. I missed the tribute at the end with the American flag in prominence. We are moving next month out of state, but would not recommend this to first-time goers. The dances were great, but all of our party did miss the old 'Viva! El Paso.'"

I saw this show 20 years ago and I loved it. Now I live in Phoenix and I invited some friends to go see it. I was truly disappointed about the quality of the show. The mariachi is painful to watch, the director loves the spotlight and he is a really bad singer with no charisma, he should let the other people sing. The concept of the show is still good but this company looked very amateurish. The mayor and his wife can take some singing and acting lessons. My overall rating in one word is disappointing. It was definitely a waste of time and effort to drive 6 hours to see this show.

We have attended other Viva El Paso shows and this one has been one of the best by far. The new changes they incorporated including referencing local people like the Schwartz' & Don Haskins really added a personal feeling and a sense of pride of how far El Paso has come. I enjoyed all of the beautiful colors and amazing dances, but sitting at the top row was a huge mistake. I could not hear their dialogue at all and could barely make out the songs they would sing. The vendors/staff working at the concessions stands were also too loud. Either their talking or using machines to make the food was a bit much. I suggest that anyone going to these shows sit closer to the stage to hear better. Hopefully they ll do something about the sound soon, but for now, sit up front.

The onpening act from the St Pius X Special Needs Group was inspirational. The singing of the Viva cast, especially the soloists, was the best we've heard in all the many years we've attended Viva. The dancing was terrific. The comedy was just right. And the tribute to the military was spot on.

Complete waste of money and time. Traveled in from Sante Fe with family and we were all disappointed. The only thing amazing was the setting of the mountains and the night sky. Sound was horrible. Bring back Mr. Barba and his team to save this beloved show. The story line does not flow at all, you have native americans dancing while there are set pieces that are meant to be in act 2. The old Viva! show had techs roll out the correct time period set pieces out according to the story. Much more dancing in the show which was good. The absolute bottom line is to bring back the old Viva! show with the story of the bride and the abuela under the tree talking about the family ancestors. The old show was much better.

I do miss the family connections from the old script but I do love the new WWII scene and the Don Haskins scene. I also love the shout out to the veterans, that is a great touch. As always the singing and dancing were great and it was just a wonderful show all the way around. My only suggestion is mic'ing up the mariachis. You can barely hear them and they are crucial to the show. Otherwise, everything was great, love, love, LOVE it!! Going back this weekend.

Dancers were off beat and were obviously out of sync the entire night. This show no longer truly portrays the history of El Paso. Sound was horrible, one singer was off key the entire song. What happened! I recall when viva was wonderful and worth the price. I was disappointed and bit embarrassed. Brought friends from San Antonio and Austin, and I bragged about what it used to be 10 years ago. The audio was poor, the story line was hard to follow, and really lights on the earth's elements costumes- Nah, sometimes things are better left as they once were- the original costumes. I would not pay the price to go see this again- ever. Comparing El Paso to other Texas city performances, El Paso has the talent, but what is lacking? Why can't they put a good show with good sound, lighting, and performances?

Viva El Paso was a cute show with energetic singing and dancing. It dragged a bit in parts, but the performers kept things moving along. Biggest problem was the sound. Something was wrong with the sound for many of the performers, and their mikes didn't work. It was hard to hear probably 30 percent of the show. Hopefully this problem gets fixed.

Last year's production of Viva was horrible! This year's productions shows promise and made many improvements. The biggest problem seemed to be with the sound system. Also, there is still some work that needs to be done with the chronological order of the production. i.e. When you introduce the mestizo, do not go back to the Spanish dancers, bring back the charro on the mountain! Overall, the performance was nice and is a beautiful representation of our history and culture. Well done!

I have been a supporter for Viva since the 80's taking very large groups to this event..From church groups to business groups always very impressed with the music, singing, acting and costumes ..... and this time I was completely disappointed with the long, long dialogue, the singing and the songs selected were very disappointing, I know many of us come from Mexico but the accents used were so strong, I didnt understand some of the dialogue ( and I speak spanish!)...the story line was completely changed very chaotic....very depressing....I missed the many beautiful dances ...Deer dance, Spanish dances, folklorico dances ....this time it was just a few of minutes of dancing and super long, long , long dialogue....please bring back the pageantry , Color, dances, talent that we once enjoyed and were proud to show off , we love our mountains and the backdrop that MCkelligon canyon ampitheatre provides.....please please bring back the Indian that would shoot the arrow into the mountaing and light up VIVA!!!

I remember going to this event as a child with my family on several occasions. I remember the dancing, it was amazing and seemed to be about 3/4's of the show, and 1/4 dialogue and singing. My husband and I went 3 years ago and the dancing was still good, but seemed to be cut short. We took our kids last Saturday and, besides the dancing and funny gun fights, we were bored. I could go to a theater production and see the same thing. I'm very disappointed. The dialogue was too much and dragged on.

I rarely go to theater. It is a more sophisticated form of entertainment. People forget that and expect a Hollywood production. I was enthralled with the setting, story, and actors. The problem will always lie with the audience which in plays is very important. Without the proper reactions or if the audience lacks that suspension of disbelief, since it is live and the actors will also respond to the audience, a bad audience will hurt the show. Go and experience an El Paso tradition and help this and other possible productions to continue the elevation of culture in this amazing city.

Somethings are better left unchanged. Viva El Paso used to be a great show. Full of energy and a great depiction of El Paso's great history. Now it is a bore with too many fictional characters and events that do not tell the true story of El Paso. In an effort to change the show they lost the substance of the history of El Paso and has too many unnecessary and fictional events, that leaves the audience confused and simply bored. Go back to the previous script please.

I have been living in El Paso now for three years. I had an opportunity to see Viva El Paso for the first time this past June. There have been a lot of statements thrown around about how "its not like it used to be". I have nothing to compare it to because I wasn't here to see how different it has become. This is what change is all about, we are scared of change. What I saw on that stage aside from the historical aspect were students, sons and daughters, young kids who were in fact born and raised in El Paso, pouring their hearts out, giving it all they have, rehearsing in 100 degree weather and above, and all people care about is how "its not what used to be". I couldn't be more proud of both my students and the director. I learned a lot that night both about the city and culture of El Paso and am proud to live in it, and it is because of what I saw that night I would see it again and would recommend it to others. So before you see it and judge it because it is in fact not the same as before please "Be wise as thou art cruel" S 140

We attended Viva El Paso years ago and the venue and show were fabulous. We recently took out-of-town guests to the show and the setting is still beautiful, but we were embarrassed that we subjected our friends to the terrible production! The dancing, singing and acting were amateurish and the story was hard to follow. It was also difficult to understand what the actors were saying. We noticed the low attendance and that others left the show early. So different from the Viva El Paso we saw and enjoyed years ago. What an embarrassment to the City of El Paso!

Wife and I went to the new production of Viva El Paso, this past weekend and it was amazing! I had seen the show before with Hector and Barba, but this show has been by far the best, it represents El Paso the Way it should of been. The History the songs written just for this show WOW! Actors, singers, dancers wow! I had been reading the comments prior to going, and I was reluctant on going but you don't know unless you go see it for yourself. Keith Townsend the new director of Viva El Paso you are doing an amazing job. Im most happy that you decided to add the scene of the company E soldiers from El Paso, THANK YOU! You have no idea how much I appreciated that. I lost a lot of my friends in the military and you continue to recognize and honor our friends and families with your show. A huge Thank you to all staff and crew of this show! Now you can really say VIVA EL PASO!

My wife and other family members had seen the show in the past, and had always told me how excellent it was. I had never seen the show, so I was able to go into it without any preconceptions. Unfortunately, as much as I tried to find something I liked within it, this was an extremely, extremely bad show. I don't know if it was due to low production values, but a great deal of the show was extremely cheap, The acting was terrible, and the songs were even worse . Parent Lee, a large part of the show has been completely changed, and more of this is placed onto the other parts that the public doesn't seem to like either . I don't really blame the actors at all, since I think they're just working with what they have. Hopefully if someone else takes over ( artistic director ), there may be hope for the show in the future. But for now, I highly recommend avoiding this so as not to encourage this type of production again

The older version of Viva El Paso had a very fluid storyline, this new version lacked that.. There were many times when I couldn't figure out what was going on. The Bowie Bears letterman jacket to the Don Haskins interview was neat but did not mesh well. Structure was a major weakness. Most of the actors did not captivate my attention. The dancers did not seem to know where they belonged at times. The mariachis were talking to each other during the play. It just wasn't as strong or solid as it could be. I think with practice and revision of the storyline it could deliver a much more compelling show.

I have seen Viva! El Paso three times now!!! I loved it!!! This show is original, true to El Paso's history and overall FANTASTIC!!! The costumes are so authentic... The Spirit of Fire costume is by far my favorite! The actors/actresses are all so well prepped. The singing was on point and overall a great show!!! Thank you EPCC/Keith Townsend for this fine show.

I've seen Viva through the years, and this year by far has to be my favorite!! The actors, to the dancers, to the singers, are just outstanding! I would definitely recommend watching it at least once.

Viva comes back to El Paso revived and better than ever before! My family and i have been living in the sun city of el paso for more than 10 years and Viva El Paso has always been an event we all enjoy to experience. Truthfully, i had no idea what to expect due to last years disappointment, However, i was blown away by how beautiful the scenery was executed along with bright costumes, excellent choreography and touching story. El Paso should be proud of what these young actors have brought to the city. VIVA EL PASO!

Congratulations to this year's VIVA! EL PASO! on a great show! Our family sees it annually and this past Saturday's performance was the best we've seen in years. With a new script by Mr. Martin that is creative, intelligent and well thought out, a wonderful variety of music and dance, as well as performances that were right at perfect (Acosta & Canales), this year's VIVA is one not to miss!!! While the production has been updated, Mr. Martin was very careful to stick to the tried and true theme of the original VIVA, created by Hector Serrano. This year's cast performance reminded me of the high energy and spirited VIVA of past, but also one that is new and fresh. BRAVO to the cast and crew on a GREAT SHOW!!!! Looking forward to seeing the show in July when I bring my out of town family to the show!!! VIVA! EL PASO!

This past weekend i went to see Viva! with my family and we all absolutely loved it! The show's cast has so much talent and really brings the story to life. The new sets look amazing this year and really added to the atmosphere of the performance. I loved hearing the singing throughout the show. It was second to none! The actors were very believable and were so nice to stop and take pictures with us after the show. The dancing was very fun to watch. It looked like the entire cast was having fun on stage and that made the audience feel it too! I will DEFINITELY be going back to see it. I cant get enough of this year's Viva! El Paso!!

We had one evening in El Paso, and chose to attend this event, as we were looking for some local color. The location is in a beautiful canyon, up in the mountains. When we got there, before the main event, a mariachi band was entertaining guests, and some food vendors were available. The show itself was about the level of what you'd get at a local college. The performers were very earnest, but not overly talented. The story was rather long, with two acts, totaling 2 hours. We stayed for the first act only, as we were tired from the long trip to El Paso and the two hour time change. The weather was threatening as well, with very high winds creating problems. If your expectations aren't too high, it's a nice night out. If you're looking for a professional presentation, this won't be for you.

A few years ago Viva was a guaranteed fun evening for the whole family. You could take the kids, out of town visitors, the whole family. Sadly that's not the case anymore. I saw the "new" Viva on June 25th, and I have to say I was thoroughly disappointed. Everything that was fun and entertaining about the show has been taken away. They used to have cool lighting and special effects, exciting fun music. It used to have a story to tie everything together, even that is gone. Now it's just a bunch of random scenes from history, that by Act 2 don't even follow a chronological order any more. my kids used to be so excited to see the show, they would always love the folklorico dancers in their bright and colorful costumes and exciting dance steps, but this year the kids were begging to leave at intermission. Unless your kids love history lecturers I suggest you find something else to do with the family this summer.

I have been in the area for 10 years and have desired to see Viva! El Paso as I had heard it was a sister show to Texas in Palo Duro Canyon. I finally had the opportunity during opening week and I was disappointed. In particular I had issues with the singing. There was one or two good singers, but many were flat and some screeched. I literally cringed at times as bad notes were hit. I think if the singing had been better, I would have been able to enjoy it better. I hope to return to McKelligon Canyon as it is a beautiful place, but I don't see myself returning to the show.

I just went to go see Viva El Paso. I am a huge fan of Viva and considered it one of the few rare treasures we have in El Paso, but after seeing this season's performance, I can no longer recommend this event to anyone. It was horrible. The acting, dancing and singing were not that bad, but the writing, the chronological progression of the play and the choreography were horrible. The numerous changes they made have changed the entire character of the performance and the script has the poor performers making stupid, silly statements. What I would not give to bring back the Viva of yesteryears!

My husband and I attended the grand opening of Viva, on Friday June 17th, and we were extremely pleased at the professional Broadway style presentation in the beautiful venue of Mckelligan canyon amphitheater. My only discontentment was the uncomfortable nature of the seats. I highly recommend bringing a small chair cushion The cast and the transistion between acts was almost seamless. Truly appreciated the strolling mariaches between scenes, and the Kachina's giving insight to the happenings on stage.

This was my first experience with Viva El Paso. The expectations I had were blown away. Although some of the performers displayed rudimentary skills, the overall performance was absolutely fantastic. The storyline sometimes strayed a bit but the production of the show was well orchestrated and kept my attention throughout. This will most definitely go down as a great memory in my life. Thank you Viva El Paso for a wonderful evening. May you all prosper in life and reach your dreams, Marty

I have watched other Viva El Paso productions and this one left me disappointed. There was a lack of talent. The dancers were good but not great like in the past. The singing was good but not great... The dance of the deer was great. He danced beautifully. I guess I just expected what I saw in the past. It was an ok event. I would go again and recommend if there were improvements made.

the show was ok at the beginning, but then the actors(dancers) were not very organized over the stage, i think its a little too pricey for what it really is... i was waiting to see more folklore dances but no they did some other type of dances not related with the truly mexican/american tradition...

To much singing. The history part was good but there was way to much singing. Not a lot of acting and to top it off the seats are the most uncomfortable seats I have ever sat it.

We've been attending Viva El Paso for many years now, and this past time in my opinion it was awful, boring and only one actor spoke the entire play instead of allowing other actor to participate/talk. No horses were present at all, no arrow thrown to the mountain at the end of the play (The signature of Viva El Paso) and many of the dancers were not sync/coordinated. I would not recommend it to anybody until they bring something similar to the old Viva El Paso...........By the way, play actors were not outside allowing visitors to take photos with them.

My family and I where disappointed in this years narration. We didn't like that the abuelita was the only one narrating the entire performance. The performance seemed longer and somewhat boring after awhile of seeing all the dance pieces. Don't get me wrong the dances where wonderful but the performers not speaking to one another or not as much singing made the whole show boring. The narration between the performers years back made the play much more lively and interesting. They would get the audience involved as well which made the play go by so fast and didn't seem long.

I was really excited to go and once again enjoy Viva El Paso after a year without! What happened?????? It is completely NOT the GREAT Performance of past years. I felt I was watching a school play. The dances were at times long and stale. The set-up with Grandma narrating the history was long winded. I wondered how the "Llorona" story was going to fit in? IT DIDN'T!!!! Totally unnecessary. Why would I want to expose such a myth to my guest from out of town? The comical side was absent. I miss the "Viejito" dance and Spaniard dance of the 90's. Looked forward on taking my sisters, but I'm having second thoughts. I sure would like to see Mr. Serrano back!!!!

If you have never seen Viva El Paso before, you would probably think this season was fine, but you would also feel that it's nothing you ever need to see again. This is a far cry from the Viva El Paso I grew up loving. Every year we would look forward to going to see the show to see what changes were made from year to year. There were definitely plenty of changes this year, but unfortunately none improved the show. What used to be an exciting and energetic show now feels more like sitting through a bad history lecture. The constant narration from the abuela made the first half feel like it was never going to end. The dancers even seemed bored performing the show. The show got rained out before it was over, but in all honesty I was thankful for the rain, it gave us an excuse to get out of there without being rude.

First half of the show can be abbreviated and it wouldn't hurt the show. Actually, it would probably enhance the duration. I felt the Indian and especially the Spaniard dancing went long. Too much time in this area made it feel like a lot of the dance numbers were simply there as a time "filler" and audience was loosing interest. The family in front of me left at intermission, actually several people did not return. The second half was so much better and entertaining.

The show was very entertaining. Great dancers and choreography. 2 problems 1) It started to rain and we missed the last 2 numbers....no finale! Sure would like to be able to see the end : ( 2) There was a very rude security guy who told me to stop taking pictures or I would have to leave! The announcer stated that videos are not allowed and we could not take flash photography. I was doing neither of those and was almost asked to leave. Need to train personnel to be more professional.

I grew up in El Paso and remember going as a kid. I was visiting from TN with my husband and wanted to show him some of the sites. It was different from when I was a kid but the story line is basically the same. Prices are definitely higher but that is to be expected after 20 years. For those new to the area or visiting, it is a great way to learn about El Paso. We unfortunately got rained out the last 30 minutes, which rarely happens in El Paso. Seats are not that comfortable but it still was a good show.
