Ratatat

Rocktronica duo Ratatat is a favorite of headbangers and ravers alike thanks to their irresistible mix of colossal riffs and booming beats. Mike Stroud’s six-string heroics and Queen-inspired guitar harmonies perfectly complement the band’s sci-fi synthesizers, and Evan Mast’s thunderous, booming basslines on fan favorites like “Loud Pipes” and “Shiller” always get ticket buyers shaking their moneymakers on the dance floor. In addition to plenty of funky jams, the duo treats audiences to a visual spectacle as psychedelic graphics and laser lights dance across projection screens. Fans that like to rock until the break of dawn and dance the night away .

Such a sick show. Amazing visual effects. Light/laser show was absolutely mesmerizing. The entire performance was in a word, spectacular. I really liked how the put the emphasis on the music. The only time one of the performers was semi-illuminated was for "Magnifique" in which Mike Stroud was enveloped in a conical laser-shroud of neon green light. The rest of the show they were constantly silhouetted by the hallucinogenic imagery projected on the screen behind them and the powerful multi-color strobe lights synced to the music. If you haven't seen them live, you are doing yourself a disservice. Book your tickets now for their next show.

Like many artists, Ratatat is best enjoyed live. More bass plus an amazing lightshow for each of the songs in the set. The music already has so much energy in it, so hearing it live made me so happy I barely knew what to do with myself. They played songs off of the new album Magnifique as well as some classics such as "Wildcat" and "Loud Pipes." They were on the stage from 9:30-11pm. I couldn't see the stage because I'm a bit short and I was in the middle of the floor, but all I needed was the music and the light show. I could have gone upstairs for a better view of the stage, but being underneath the lasers has a different energy than being above them looking down. I guess I sound like I was on some mind-altering substances for the concert, but I swear it isn't needed. The music and visual experience is the only high you need!

One of the best concerts I've ever been to, and not just because I love Ratatat. The band was engaging onstage, the visuals were strange and unforgettable, and the lasers and energy were great. They played all of their hits, old and new, in a way that flowed and the time flew by.

It was alright. Ratatat didn't play anything that wasn't exactly as it sounded on CD. Ultimately I think live artists need to bring something unique to the live experience - other than cool LEDs

I bought surprise tickets to the Ratatat concert for my boyfriend as a going away present for college. The first act was good but i couldn't stand the second act, but after 3 hours of waiting when they finally came out the crowd went wild and it was sooooo worth it! I thought I was gonna get trampled by the crown during the first few songs but once we got to the back it was great. The light show was insane and everyone was into it. Beside the long wait and all of the pot smoking, it was perfect. Best concert I've ever been to!

The only suggestion for improvement was wait time in between sets - it was obvious the stage was ready at 10:45 p.m. but Ratatat didn't come on until 11:05. Not to sound pretentious, but it was a Tuesday night and if the show is ready to start, start. We've already made the effort to be there on a weeknight. So, if it's going to be a late show put it on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. Keep it before midnight if it's a weeknight. This concert was pretty legit - it's the second concert I've been to in a year where people danced, moshed, and were visibly into the music. Seattlites typically are pretty mellow and stand listening to bands and artists without really getting into the music. So I was so thrilled to finally find a concert where I could wildly dance around and be into the music in a way that's not just nodding my head from side to side. I don't think anyone could have had a bad time at this concert.

Ratatat's music is great, it sounds kind of like a throwback to hair rock, but it's got modern beats. I love that they actually play some of the tracks, I wish it were more or fully live, but that's got to make touring more difficult. Plus, it definitely fits their aesthetic to be able to do wide-legged rock guitar poses. The visuals and lighting for this tour are amazing. It was a stadium-quality production in a somewhat small venue. Worth checking out if you like flashy/interesting/cool/beautiful graphics and lights.

Overall, Ratatat had an energetic and engaging set. They had a great set list, comprising of the best songs off most of their released work, as well as some new material (and an amazing and creepy music video to match). I was generally impressed with the amount of instrument switching. They came up with some fun visual effects for their act that culminated in colorful percussive moment in-unison with big heavy mallets, and the crowd was really enjoying themselves. Security also did a great job of support, staying out of the way, and not being dicks. The sound quality at Showbox Sodo is some of the worst I've heard, which is inexcusable for a venue of that size, however. Downsides to this show were the apparent challenge it was for Ratatat to play percussion instruments in strict time. Everyone deserves a bit of leeway with such broad talent, but these guys should probably practice that part a bit more. Also, it wouldn't kill them to bring in other musicians for their live shows. It can still be a two-man project, and then bring along a session keyboardist/dj/drummer to add in the other parts of the song. Overall, a great show, but likely a one-shot for me unless I happen to run into them at a festival.

The 1st opener I expected to be OK, and it was...the (unexpected) second opener was absolutely awful. I've seen bands better than them LOSE battle-of-the-bands contests; how are they playing in front of hundreds of people? and opening for a band like RATATAT? I am sorely disappointed in the overall show experience: I have been to a lot of concerts over the years, and I have NEVER had to stand around until 11pm for the headliner to come on. I drove 2 hours to see Ratatat at Shobox SoDo - I had to leave the venue early so I could catch the last ferry home. I expected to see the whole Ratatat set, with a "Doors at 8" ticket. Now, what I saw of Ratatat was enjoyable, even if it wasn't the best live concert I've ever seen. Next Time, Showbox/Ratatat, please put "With Special Guests" on the ticket - and I mean Short-Bus/Drool-cup sort of Special.

Proposing that Ratatat was amazing really is an understatement. The band was incredible and they put on an unbelievable show. The openers were not that great, but it didn't even matter because when Ratatat arrived/began to play, the other bands had completely escaped my thoughts. Ratatat's sound replaced all thought while they were playing. Ratatat is easily one of the greatest bands that I have seen live.

I've seen a lot of good shows and I would absolutely put Ratatat in my top three. They were much more guitar driven than I expected which made it not only an awesome electronica show, but an awesome rock show as well. Their energy and the crowd's energy from them was just incredible. Not to mention they were playing at First Ave which is a great venue and was perfect for their sound. Ratatat, one of my favorite bands before the concert, has continued to be a band that I will listen to for as long as they provide my ears with the sound of music that makes me, at the very least, bob my head in rhythm. They put on a stellar show with fascinating lights, videos, and seemingly entire performances without saying but 3-4 sentences; Among these are, "thank you," and names of the songs. They have a great stage presence because they are silhouetted almost the whole concert due to lights behind them. They music is great and the sound team did a great job making the bass beats vibrate through the floor into your body. They play songs from all of their CDs regardless of featuring their newest album, and they are very worthwhile to see live. Bring friends and stay at least a bit coherent to soak in the whole experience. Also, the Riviera theater is a great venue, albeit a bit rundown but still beautiful and very spacious with bars EVERYWHERE!

This was by far the most beautiful show I've ever seen. They did things with light waves that I've never even imagined, let alone seen in real life. Their visuals are always incredible (and often hilarious), but the addition of two hologram screens took it over the top. Single-beam lasers as bright as the sun, cross-hatched lasers that changed colors and shapes, and laser WAVES that literally undulated like a bed sheet in the wind. Absolutely mind-blowing, like stepping inside the Internet (if that makes any sense). The music was great, as expected, but the sound seemed off for most of the night. There was one song that had such mangled bass levels that I didn't even recognize it as being Ratatat - and I know the song! Sound aside, this is easily the best $25 (!!!) I've ever spent.

I've been wanting to see Ratatat ever since i was introduced to them and scooped up tickets to the sold out show as soon as they went on sale. I was not disappointed! The light show was AMAZING and the band's energy only supplemented it. Their classics and new songs were played. I imagine their popularity has taken a sky rise due to Coachella but it still was an intimate feeling show. Really diverse crowd but everyone was low key and friendly. Lots of bored looking girlfriends in attendance but the active fans had a blast. If you like strobes, lasers, streaming visuals with high energy music then this is a must-see show. On another note: I've never been through such strict security. It surprised me.

After a heavy rain shower, both your flip flops and hopes get a little damp as far as attending a concert. However, it turned out to be great time. This was my third or fourth time seeing RATATAT, and although it was weird not having their cutting synths reverberating off walls, Summerstage provided a nice open-air experience for enjoying one of my favorite Electronic bands. First opening act was hilarious as well as talented. I was very surprised that someone calling himself "Black Pus" would turn out to be a gifted musician. As for the second opening act, Omar Suleman, I'm not sure quite what got him from Northern Syria to the middle act in a Ratatat concert. The guys themselves were great showmen. Lots of enthusiasm, good dynamics with the crowd, never messed up the music, and did a few creative things so the show didn't sound exactly like their recordings. A nice light show and strange video clips provided the perfect accompaniment. I hardly ever go to concerts but this was so worth it.

Doors opened at 5:30 but Ratatat didn't go on until 8:30 due to opening acts. Nowhere on any of the stubs or online did it mention all the openers but luckily my friends knew about it from previous experience so we hung out a bar before heading there at 7. The one opening act we saw was terrible beyond imagination (it also started to rain as soon as he opened his mouth and stopped when he closed it). Ratatat themselves were good although I feel that I would have enjoyed the background images a lot more if I wasn't sober. Seventeen years didn't have as much kick as I was expecting. My reasoning is that they overplayed it.

This was a great event overall. My first time seeing Ratatat live and they put on an awesome show. Their stage effects really added to the show, and the crowd went wild for most of the song. I also really liked the opener Omar Souleyman.. an interesting first taste of Syrian dance music and they really got the crowd fired up for Ratatat. High points: -Reaction from the crowd for many of the songs, -enduring a surprise downpour to see Ratatat and being gifted with a gorgeous sunset afterwards -guys selling nitrous balloons in central park after the show -exploring NYC before the show. - making my way to almost front row. Low points: -$8 beers (no thanks, tore off my wristband and trashed it), -The first opener "Black Pus" who was awful and more of an endurance exercise than a performer. Seriously, frantically bashing a drum coupled with the same droning effect for extended periods of time, and using vocal processing that makes it sound like a clothespin is permanently clamped on your nose makes for a pretty bad show. Only time I have seen a performer given thumbs down and flipped off by the audience.

This show was one for the books. Brought 12 friends and none of us were let down. The venue was huge and you could see from everywhere. THE AESTHETICS! the background effects as well as the small screens were above and beyond this world. The stage and lights were just beautiful. The drumming at the end was too epic to believe. The music they dropped was just what I asked for. Although one thing stood out....done at 11? it made us sad but if we could do it again we'd do it every day. ROCK ON RATATAT. The show started with Bobby Birdman I had never heard any of his music, but I really enjoyed his performance! I can't remember the other band's name but their music was good I just wish I could have heard more of the singer, the lead's mic wasn't turned up enough. RATATAT was the coolest! They were unbelievable! I had the privilege of being all the way in the front and I had the most amazing time! They're whole set up was amazing and I felt every beat inside me. I had my doubts beforehand that maybe I wouldn't enjoy them as much because they don't have lyrics in their songs. Needless to say, I was completely proved wrong. so ... club nokia is a cool venue ... if you are one of the first 100 people, you get to be really up close to the stage, which I was. the only "bad" thing about this show was the wait ... the ticket said 7:30pm ... the opening band started at 9pm ... second opening band started at 10pm ... ratatat came on at 11pm ... well ... by the time ratatat came on, my energy was pretty much gone. but, with that said, it was still an nice show to watch. it's visually stimulating. they had two holograms (one on the left and one on the right) and a huge screen in the background. the best part is how the videos they play in the background is in perfect sync with the music. i mean, people were literally in awe ... i saw some jaws drop ... it's definitely not a boring show, that's for sure. overall, i recommend seeing ratatat, just make sure the venue is cool, so you can get up close. oh yeah, you should definitely expect a lot of young folks (high school and college kids) running around at a ratatat shows, although there was a gentlemen (over the age of 50) who was dancing insanely to the music ... yes! everybody was looking at him! ... lol

Ratatat is my FAVORITE artist. I was so excited for this show and I bought tickets on the first day they were available. I've never been able to attend a Ratatat show so this was my first one. The show itself was fun; I wasn't a huge fan of the opening acts, but they weren't really the reason why I went anyway. Both acts played way longer than I had anticipated - until after 10:30! I was ready for Ratatat to come out at 9 when the lights of the Showbox Sodo actually turned off. When Ratatat's set actually started, they performed perfectly. The lighting was great and everyone was having a great time. The reason why I give it 4 starts instead of 5 is mostly because I was surprised and disappointed that they didn't speak to the crowd at all and just walked off stage at the end of the set and the lights came on. It was sort of a lackluster finish for me, personally. Overall the music was amazing (obviously) and the crowd was great, but it sort of missed the mark for me a little bit. Perhaps I would have given this show 5 stars if it had been at a bigger venue.. but probably not.

The show was great! Ratatat is unstoppable! I did not care for the opening acts but the main attraction made it worth the wait. The best part (besides the music) was the incredible show of imagery projected onto plexiglass- so high def they looked like they were actually on stage! It was enthralling!

I've gone to First Ave for RATATAT before but this was more a polished show and the visuals were much updated. With vaporous apparitions of accompaniment on either side of the stage and an LED light show at their flanks, it was akin to what you d see at much costlier shows. The performance itself was concentrated on the LP4 album with the occasional throwback injected for familiarity. The Current 89.3 was helpful in getting the word out there for this show and has had RATATAT in their catalogue for some time. Overall, I d say the performance was brilliant.

The show started off with an unforgettable vibe and flair of understated showmanship that is typical of the band. They played a great set and were wise to include "Seventeen Years". Ratatat still has it. They will always have it as long as they continue to perform so brilliantly.

The dynamic onstage between Mike and Evan was so awesome to watch. The light show was AMAZING. The songs live are AMAZING. Everything about the show was great. They also had a great setup on stage as well.

Ratatat has very respectable guitar play. The solos and performance was eye capturing and really made you appreciate the guitar play that accompanies all of the electronic sounds that the band utilizes to make their music. The light show was also a great aesthetic touch that forced you to look around the room and interact with the lights. You were able to blow at certain beams to create different textures and be creative in altering the lights in other ways. Overall, this was a great show and one I would go to again, especially as a gift. I got tickets to this concert for my girlfriend as a Christmas gift and she loved it.

I wanted to go but wasn't initially planning on it for financial reasons. Then my girlfriend and a group of her friends convinced me and I'm glad they did. These guys really put on a great show. The music was on point and the lasers really added to the effect. The whole crowd was definitely feeling it. The opener was OK and the drinks were pricey, but the venue accommodated a lot of people, and overall, I had a fantastic time.

The show was amazing, but it would have been nice to know it started 3 hours after the doors opened BEFORE we arrived at EchoStage. The tickets said 6:30, Ratatat took the stage at 9:30.

Ratatat hadn't performed in Boston for roughly 5 years, which is roughly 5 years too long to go without seeing them in concert. Luckily they didn't miss a beat, and freakin killed it at the House of Blues. I'm actually not a huge fan of the venue (got stuck on the upper floor the last time they were around and couldn't see anything) but floor level was great. Their setlist was pretty great as well, with my only disappointment being they didn't play Rome, but I'm sure I'll find a way to carry on.

After hearing Ratatat's recorded music, I was NOT expecting this caliber of epicness. Holy balls can these guys put on a show! The visuals were amazing, the lasers were awesome, and dat bass was nothing short of ridiculous. I gave 4 stars because of the audio imbalance. I don't know who was responsible for the mixing at Echostage, but the midrange was lacking, and the lead parts were sometimes completely inaudible. At multiple points in the show I could see an epic guitar solo happening, but I couldn't hear it at all! While this was a little disappointing, the show was still really incredible. If you're considering seeing Ratatat live, do it! I promise you won't regret it. I really enjoyed the headliner too, but some of my friends thought he was too weird. "Jackson and his Computer Band" if you want to check out his jams. His stuff was mixed well actually, which I don't understand, but whatevs.

Ratatat slays everything every time I see them. I saw them in Columbus in September and they ripped my face off, Washington was insane, and I'm heading back to see them in Raleigh tonight just three days later. Do. It.

They didn't say anything about being in DC, or really say anything to the audience at all. The set was short, they really just played a couple songs.

These guys are rock gods! The event was packed. Great show, great videos, great musicians/artists. Who needs lyrics, when these guys say so much with their playing? Mike Stroud is the new Prince, this guy could play a pair of socks and make them sound good. The crowd loved them, you can really tell they like to perform too. 3 encores were not enough!

Hot Sugar was good for getting us hyped. The music was stylish, beautiful and weird and I like weird. I just wish they advertised who he was better. I had to really dig to find out his stage name and where to find his music. Ratatat themselves opened like the gates of heaven! They mixed some of their past music with their new songs from "Magnifique". I was afraid that their so called experimental phase would end with their apparent return to their roots. I do wish they talked a little more in between songs; they were pretty shy. I guess the music is the most important part though. And Unfortunately their amazing light show included the use of flashing red and blue lights during one song (I think it was "Pricks of Brightness". There were warnings about flashing lights and lasers, but still, not cool... But their music was great! Everyone was dancing (so I had to stand so I could see the band...) and they played multiple instruments while it was only two guys onstage. I was glad I went...Until it rained after the concert (but you can't control the weather).

The show was fantastic - I highly recommend people to go see Ratatat live. However, they didn't play very long. The opener came on around 8:15 and played for almost an hour. Then Ratatat came on around 9:20 and finished by 10:40, it was kind of disappointing. I wish they played a longer set, at least 2 hours...

By far the loudest concert I have attended. While in a smaller venue, it had bright lasers EVERYWHERE, 3 video walls and a full set up run by a board that Evan could control on stage. This is 2 guys who make these incredibly complicated and inter-woven songs. They don't use road musicians. it's just the 2 of them, playing on top of backing tracks, which in essence is what RATATAT is all about. The only thing I would change is that they don't use spotlights or illuminate from the front, so the concert of them playing is pretty dimly lit. The concert experience itself is immersive and dazzling, but you don't really get to see the artists playing as much as you might like. There are countless instruments set up around the talent to be played. Mike on (stage right) loves rocking out on his guitar and plays drums and keyboard throughout; often at the same time. Also played the Pedal steel guitar for a couple of tracks. Evan (stage left) seems to be the tech-master and plays bass, keyboards, drums, autoharp and countless pedal-driven sounds. Merch table had Cds for sale so I was able to get 2 out-of-circulation Cds to complete my Ratatat Anthology. Plus I know that these sales directly support the artist, which is something you don't often get to say when buying online or used. Evan and Mike were very approachable before and after the show. Got my 'Magnifique' CD cover autographed by both.

I absolutely love Ratatat. A girl friend and I used the tour as an excuse to travel around the east coast. I went to both shows in New York and was disappointed in the crowd. It seemed that 3/4's of the people were 15 and 16 yrs old. They all had clearly been abusing alcohol and were busy creating mosh pits all over the floor. We were forced to move to the out skirts of the crowd but we had to continue being conscious of our surroundings, taking our attention away from the show. The second night we decided to stand on the upper deck. The "tweens" were running around like toddlers up there too. I feel a 21 and up section would have made the show much more enjoyable. Or because the shows were in the same venue a whole night dedicated to an older age group would have been amazing. Every thing else about the experience was great. Liquor was reasonably priced, the line to get in didn't take that long, bathrooms were very clean, and the coat/purse check was a great feature. Overall I really enjoyed seeing Ratatat at Terminal 5.

ratatat was really good, they played for a long time(in comparison to other shows i've been to). they also didn't specifically play songs from one album which i liked. allllllso the crowd was really good, great energy, and they(ratatat) fed back that energy if that makes any sense... ALSO mike(the one on the left in the picture) crowd surfed at the end which was also kewlz.

I must say first of all say that Ratatat put on a great show. They were exactly how I would imagine them live and their stage technicians did a wonderful job. It's hard to have stage present with non-vocal music but they exceeded. However, the venue strongly affected my experience negatively. Had Ratatat played somewhere else, I would have nothing negative to say. It was too crowded, the audience was pretty awful, and a bouncer tried to jack my friend. My friend was pulled for possession even though he did not have anything on him other than his cell phone and his wallet. The bouncer took my friend into the handicap stall of the men's room, went through his wallet, told him he was being arrested for possession, and then tried to make him to go the ATM and give him money. The rest of the concert was distressing at best which made it difficult to enjoy Ratatat at the fullest. The point of my review is to tell people to see Ratatat, if they possibly can, at a venue they trust and enjoy. It's the kind of music you want to dance to and not have to worry about feeling unsafe in your environment. Great show, Ratatat.

This incredible show put on by two extremely talented musicians was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. This awesome display of musical talent was made even better by the incredible visuals. The mix of lights, awesome visuals and a never boring dance beat kept the crowd dancing and rocking for the entire show. I got there an hour early and got front row, center SRO. I even got the official setlist when the concert was over. Amazing show
