Amel Larrieux

Amel Larrieux completed the night for lovers. Lovers celebrating each other, lovers of original music, and lovers of art all came together to witness a musical rarity who represents all of the above. Even with liquor flowing all night, who could forget how seemingly coy yet assuring Groove Theory's leading lady appeared when taking us through her colorful catalogue. Larrieux's most recent work from the latest album "Ice Cream Everyday" connected noticeably well with the younger attendees in the audience. She played a game of crowd participation with her self-dubbed "brave bird" followers, humming tunes urban radio stations of today should incorporate to balance out the monotonous format that's driving its listeners to other genres. It's no wonder R&B's biggest soundstage, The Essence Music Festival, has invited Amel Larrieux to perform this year in New Orleans. Amel gave us a fantastic show...I would go see her again. If you didn't go to this show you need to catch her next one. It's worth it....

So here is the deal, pros and cons: Pros - She was INCREDIBLE and commanded the entire stage; her phrasing was daring, intuitive and brilliant; her banter with the crowd was easy and she was stunning and natural. She did a great cover of MJ's "I Can't Help It" - my favorite MJ song (written by my MAN, Stevie Wonder). DJ Rashida, the pre-concert entertainment, was off the chain. Cons - She didn't take the stage until nearly 10:00 and her set could've been another 20 minutes as far as I am concerned (where was Infinite Possibilities??). The rest of this is about the venue: the chairs were uncomfortable and too close together; for some reason, they didn't have enough chairs to match the tickets sold; it was REALLY loud; the drinks were stupid expensive.

I have been listening to Amel since I was 11 when she was with groove theory. Seeing her in person was even more gratifying because her voice was just as good as it is on the CD, and I can't say that about many artists. Even better she carries herself on stage as if she weren't a famous singer. Her personality is gleeful, her songs are heavenly and the entire experience was amazing. I can't wait to see her again.

I really enjoyed the concert. Amel was great, her voice was amazing, the band was wonderful, and the venue was up close and personal. EXCELLENT!

The Event was Amazing! The Band was phemonenal and only to hear that the band only started playing together two days prior to the show.made it more mesmorizing. Amel was more gorgeous than ever before. Then to notice her beautiful daughter on stage with her was an memorable moment. Their voices were superb and could only imagine what the future has in store for the Larrieux family. The venue was perfect for this family style intimacy performance.

Awesome, venue... Amazin' Artistry... Ms. Amel rocked my spirit.... She touched everything and everyone.... An amazin' performance.... I'm a fan for life! The conga room is to' out the frame! Awesome intimate setting..... I will be back.

I have been trying to see Amel for years. Happenned to be in the LA area and caught her @ the Conga Room. It was an awesome experience!!! The Conga Room was a great venue, small, intimate, and perfect for Amel.

Amel started a little late but she came out and did gave a wonderful performance. She did a few songs from her Groove Theory Day's. Her daughter was a back up singer and is just as talented as her Mom. The Conga Room is a cool spot, all though the drinks were way over priced

Took my wife, as a surprise for our anniversary, and we were both pleasantly surprised! Amel and her daughter, Rocked! It was a great show, would highly recommend to any of my friends. Thanks, Amel, for helping make our anniversary even more special.

We fully enjoyed the perfomance by Larieux! It was a much anticipated event for us Westerner's who would have otherwise had to fly to the east coast. The song selection and the club's acoustics were perfect. My husband and I didn't feel llike we'd lost 5% of our hearing the next day. The hype of the crowd kept the vibe alive the whole night through! We danced most of the night away listening to Amel's lyrical falsetto that at times sound like a pitch perfect instrument. An amazing rating for us would have been a full blown concert. Kudos to the conga room for inviting real artists to perform and Amel for keeping real music alive!

Without the pretension, without the diversions, with just the music and the woman Amel Larrieux was spellbinding. She connected with the audience effortlessly and was gracious the entire night. Her voice was mellifluous and her aura was calm and pleasant. Find a way to see Amel perform, live. This is what it's about!

Amel Larrieux is an amazing performer - her lyrics, music and soulful style have gotten my attention for many years now. From Groove Theory to her upcoming album, I love to come back to her music - she is a talented and beautiful musician. It was a great show last night!

Great show by Amel in DC. Drove all the way from NC to see her. She is truly an artist. She does not hide behind a "package" she lets her talent do all the talking.

Amel is a superstar. She has an incredible voice with a down-to-earth personality! I enjoyed every song.

Amel voice is undeniably amazing. Her octave range is a match to those most recognized (Mariah) and she gives a personal and soulful performance. You can tell that her band is like family and in fact it included family with her daughter on the keys and background singer. She allowed her daughter to give us a taste I her talent and the apple definitely did not fall far from the tree. Her voice is gorgeous and rivals her mother. She will taking the stage solo in no time :) Overall the show was great! It was nice to get a glimpse into the new album while hearing some of her past work that stirs ur heart!

Awesome performer! Amel performed a great mix of new and old hits. She loved the crowd;s energy and really showed appreciation of her fans! Not so crazy about this venue (BB Kings NYC); its very spacious, but I was supposed to have a table but when I showed up no tables were left.

I absolutely love the setting she set, made everyone feel like we wre her family and she was family, so humble so sweet. The family (and her band) were so down to Earth and was just so open and free and definitely Sky is so talented girlfriend can sing and they all (including Amel) basically freestyle on a few songs with different keys and harmonies it really blew my mind away. She featured some of her new pieces from her new album so it became a very very very exclusive event. A fusion of hip-hop, groovy R&B, jazz, and Middle Eastern and African rhythms overlaid with the singer's soulful vocals. The B.B. Kings servers were attentive and kind, I would definitely invite everyone. It's great to get away for sure and when you go there, you can bet your money's worth that all your troubles that day are over and come to close to being completely forgotten. The choice of wines were good. i admire some of the menu selections it gave a Louisiana feel with Love Jones groove and a reminiscing moment of the 90s. sigh* the good ole' days lol. I really appreciate heart and give all talent and music. You feel it you don't just hear the beat and listen to lyrics its a whole package.

I've seen Amel 5 times and every time she gives a better performance. She's an amazing performer.

I've had the chance to see Amel many times in a few different cities and NYC crowds are definitely the best! The energy at this show was like a party and Amel definitely delivered!!! Vocally, she was on point and her interaction with the crowd is always what makes her shows such a pleasant experience. DEFINITELY see her if you get the chance!

Amel is wonderful! She is a true artist. Her voice sounds just as beautiful live as it does on record. She goes into scat-mode at times which is also fun to watch, and her band even tells jokes. Her daughter is frickin talented too...even sang/rapped to Slick Rick and Biggie songs. Her energy is soo live, she's corky, deep, and sill wears flight suits. Love her eccentricity!

I have been a fan for some time now & never got the chance to see Amel Larrieux in person. This show was awesome. I loved everything about it. If your looking for a smooth, jazzy/R&B/blues feel, this artist is for you. Her voice is sooo sweet. And the fact that her daughter is part of her band with the same sweet voice is amazing. Awesome show!

Amel was a great performer. I've had all her albums. However, this is the first time I saw her live and I was so taken aback by the energy she gives to every musical piece she delivers. Her voice is like a like a "haven of peace". Being in the room with Amel and her voice removes you from the outside world and lets you release your worries and burdens!

Amel is amazing in concert. If you ever have the opportunity definitely go see her!!!

I only liked 2 songs, the rest of the concert, I was ready to go. I think she sang knew stuff and I just didnt like it. Her voice is beautiful, like a instrument, just the material wasn't entertaining to me.

Amel Larrieux continues to be one of the most underrated and overlooked R& B artists of today. Her concert at the Howard Theatre was intimate, ethereal, and awesome. The one problem I had was that it was too short! I could listen to her sing for hours. Great venue for a fantastic performance.

I am a huge Amel fan and was looking forward to seeing her show. Amel has an absolutely stunning voice, but for some reason she barely performed any of her hits. I recommend seeing her, but just be prepared to not know half the songs. Also, her daughter has an absolutely beautiful voice. Amel should allow her daughter to perform a duet with her and pass the torch.

Her voice is angelic! Her style is amazing! Her performance was BEAUTIFUL!!

What else can be said about Ms. Larrieux? She sung beautifully and entertained the crowd. Lots of interaction with the audience but it did not interfere with the flow of the show. The Birchmere is a nice, intimate venue and I will definitely return again to see the Birchmere and to see Amel!

WOW! Her performance left me speechless and breathless. The things that woman can do with her voice is absolutely amazing. She connected well with the audience and allowed us to see a more personal side to her that was achieved through her music. My money couldn't have been better spent on a better singer. I'd go see her again and again and again. She mixed old with new and never lost my attention. GO SEE HER!!!!

From the intimate venue to a set list that gave us some of our old favorites as well as some new stuff; this concert was amazing!

Amel Larrieux's show was as wonderful as i expected it to be... she did all of my classic favorites, threw in a few fabulous covers and shared new music too. it was a family show with her daughter providing back up vocals and accompaniment.... my only complaint was that the show was too short. i wanted more and more encores. whenever she comes back to DC, i'm definitely buying a ticket.

What a treat this was to see one of our favorite singers. Amel comes to the DC area to various locations, but this was even better at the Howard Theater. Newly renovated, we were impressed at th decor, food, and drinks. Amel did not let the crowd down displaying her wide vocal range, style, and the reason why she has maintained her strong following. This turned out to be a great date night as well as we continued the night hanging on U St. My girlfriend was all smiles the whole night.

Amel was amazing, the venue was so nice! I can't wait until she returns to DC, I will be in attendance for sure.

This was the first time that I saw Amel Larrieux live and I wasn't disappointed. She has an amazing voice and the Howard Theatre was the perfect venue to showcase it. Amel did all her hits, including Groove Theory's "Tell Me", and she sounded better live than on her albums, which is hard to do. If you've never seen Amel live, you're missing out because she gives an engaging, exciting show.

Great show! some meet and greet afterward. Amel is just as REAL as she portrays herself in her music. LOVES HER! Must see!

Venue was great, the show started a little late. But the show was great and she sounded great. Just lIke she does on her cds.

Venue was beautiful! And the food there is good and reasonably priced. Sound quality could have been a lil better. Amel and her band were a delight!

I've seen Amel Larrieux twice and she puts on a great show. I have 't see. Her in awhile, so I was very excited for her show. Whomp, whomp. The floor that is usually filled with fans rocking was instead filled with tables. Okay, BB Kings, I guess ya'll trying to get your Valentine's Day money. And I guess V-Day was the reasoning for a mainly ballady, acoustic, rushed set. That and maybe her allergies. Anyway, I was bored and disappointed.

Ms Larrieux was her usual suave, cool, sophisticated and sentilating self! Aside from relaxation, she adds a sense of humor to her set, and as always, goes for the audience participation thing when singing some of her upbeat tempos. The band was smooth, and surprisingly, her oldest daughter is a member and has been blessed with her mother's golden vocal cords. She is a fluent musician also, and should consider doing something on her own as well. Amel also introduced her younger daughter who is a makeup artist, and also has the voice of an angel. The performance was great, and acoustics were fab. The show did start late, but the artist was there before time practicing so, not sure what the holdup was. The food was delicious but table space is poor. No problem with open seating, as if on a cruise ship, but the personal space between each patron is next to none. People come in all sizes, I can only imagine the comfort level of any one over 190lbs. If you don't mind an occasional thigh touching yours, or eating with one hand in your lap, then you're gonna fit right in. Suggestion, get there early and ask the person seating you to sit at the end cap of the table. BB King's could use an interior design makeover, especially for the pit area.

She was everything I hoped for beautiful voice great spirit Her voice is real sounds like her CD just a great performance.

The venue was nice and I was thankful to get upgraded seats for no additional cost, however the service was slow and a staff member attempted to move us until we explained that we were seated there by staff. Amel was okay, her vocals weren't that strong at times and her audience engagement was mediocre. Amel and her daughter were a decent vocal pair. Congrats to the couple that got engaged that evening.

Never heard her live before, but remember her great voice from back in the day. Her voice was shaky and her stage coordination was sloppy. I will listen to her old albums.

The show was just ok! It kinda dragged along, it seemed she didn't sing any of the popular songs and the ones she did sing they didn't sound the the actual material. Grab a bottle of wine, dim the lights and throw on the CD. You're enjoy that more, and to the venue-please stop selling tickets when there is no longer a place to sit. Tickets cost to much to stand all night

I absolutely loved the show and i love amel even more! i'm always inspired by women who take care of themselves -spiritually and physically -and it's easy to see that amel is one of those women. i wish the show was longer, but otherwise, there were no complaints at all.

The show exceeded my expectations. The band was incredible, and Amel was a complete delight. Then it was revealed that the back up singer was her daughter...a future star for sure. Amel's performance was the highlight of our Anniversary Weekend.

Very intimate and soulful experience. Went here with my boyfriend and had a great time. He had never listened to her before but was a sure fan by the end of the show. However, I wish our waitress wasn't so pushy about the time we ordered drinks and paid the bill. She was annoying.

My wife and I truly enjoyed the show, It was my first time seeing Amel Larrieux in concert. We were blessed to have sits in the VIP section. Amel touched our hearts.

Amel was funny, and real. Her daughter was her back up singer and she was as talented and as beautiful as her mother. Can't wait to see her as she grows up and hopefully have her own album and band. She had us all sing to her and it was awesome and she loved how we sounded! We did sound pretty great ;)

I was very impressed with how great Amel Larrieux sounded. every song was FIRE!! the energy that she brings to the show along with the band. it was an experience that I will cherish for some time. what really shocked me was as the band was warming up and seeing this lady warming up on the keyboard. I'm thinking Amel still looks like she is about 20!! not knowing that was her daughter until Amel walked out and she still looked great. when those two sang together, that was the most impressive part of the show to me. I would difintely go see Amel again. and I will be a fan of Sky also if her music is anything like moms. Great show!

Amel Larrieux ALWAYS gives an excellent show. This was my first time at the Howard theater and it is a great place for a date. The food is excellent. The only down side is they need more wait staff.
