The Civil Wars

The Civil Wars

Soulful folk-pop duo The Civil Wars has made quite a mark on the genre in just a few short years, hitting the tour trail with the likes of Emmylou Harris and Adele. Singer/songwriters Joy Williams and John Paul White met at a Nashville songwriting session and got to work on an EP entitled “Poison & Wine” with producer Charlie Peacock, the title track of which appeared on the popular TV show “Grey’s Anatomy.”“Barton Hollow,” The Civil Wars’ full-length debut, surfaced in early 2011 and landed at the top of Billboard’s Independent Albums and Folk Albums charts. It wasn’t long before the two musicians were performing on nighttime television talk shows on both sides of the pond, as well as tackling concerts at the Newport Folk Festival and the iconic Grand Ole Opry.

This was one of the best performances I have been to yet. It was so surreal. I have never heard a crowd get so quiet before in my life. No one was singing along. Everyone was mesmerized by the two wonderful performers on stage. I will never forget my first live experience with the Civil Wars. I plan to see much much more!

These two have amazing chemistry and stage presence! They've also got to be two of the most musically talented people i have had the pleasure to see. Their voices are beautiful and their music seems so much more than an acoustic guitar and a key board. Amazing is the only way to describe their performance!

The Civil Wars were amazing!!! I love the simplicity of their sound, and the fact that the people who were there to see them didn't feel the need to sing along with every song - there's nothing I hate more than having someone beside me or behind me singing their own BAD rendition of whatever song I'm there to hear the ARTIST sing. There was an expecant hush in the crowd every time they were performing a song. It was breath-taking. It ended too soon!!!! I hope the Civil Wars continue to make magic and music! I can't wait to see them again!

I totally recommend seeing The Civil Wars to anyone who likes great harmonies! Their vocals were so spot on, I was in complete amazement! The level of difficulty for what they did was incredible. They played all the songs I wanted to hear and did amazing covers of "Disarm" Smashing Pumpkins and "Billie Jean" Michael Jackson! Both were very well done and sounded very little like the original. They have great stage pressence and deliver a wonderful live show! Hope to see them again soon!

The Civil Wars show exceeded my high expectations. I knew they were good based on their record, but hearing their voices in the context of a live music hall made it even more impressive. It was reminiscent of an old country duo (ala Johnny and June) hitting the road with just a guitar and some great songs, which is very appealing to me in this landscape of overproduced entertainment. I think they will go far, win Grammys, and soon it will be difficult to see them up close and personal like this. So go see them now!

I have wanted to see The Civil Wars for a long time now and their performance was absolutely amazing. Seeing them live was a dream come true and they did not let me down. Their chemistry on stage is captivating and JVM took my breath away. I'd recommend this show to everyone and anyone. My only wish is that there had been a meet and greet, but I love you guys anyways!

I can say with certainty that this is one of the best shows I have ever been to. JVM was liked more by my GF than myself but was awesome, and the Civil Wars were absolutely amazing. Sound was great, venue was great, overall it gets a million thumbs up. Bonus: hotdog cart outside after venue, classic LA bacon wrapped hot dogs, delicious. Beer was $9 a cup, a little ridiculous.

The Civil Wars were one of the best executed shows I have ever seen. While the set up was simple, the harmonies and the musicianship were impeccable. I was blown away. Joy and John Paul also happen to have some of the best on stage chemistry, and the interaction helps make the often melancholy music much more fun throughout the night. You don't necessarily want to be sad for the whole hour set. The entire audience was captivated in the fairly large venue of El Rey Theatre (more than the Largo and other previous shows). This is a must see show. Get tickets if you can. James Vincent McMorrow was a great show in his own right as well. He was a archetypical artist, not very talkative, but incredibly talented and well executed. The only drawback was his decision to play his last song unplugged in a venue where his music could not project. Bought his album that night and been listening to it at every opportunity.

Not only are their harmonies more powerful and equally tight live, but the "ying and yang" of Joy and JP is cut out of a perfectly executed Abbot and Costello bit. Exceptional and they are still growing! They started "Poison & Wine" a bit fast, and the instrumentation of "Barton Hollow" is a little weak live, but everything else surpassed expectations.

The Civil Wars are an extremely talented Duo. Excellent, fine tuned blend of voices and talented composition skills. They are also, though unique in style, are eclectic in the sense of blending styles. On top of being great musicians they are also excellent performers with a stage presence that's extremely welcoming but professional at the same time. Please go see The Civil Wars, I guarantee you will enjoy.

This show at the El Rey in Los Angeles was fairly brief, with about two hours of music -- including the opening act -- but those two hours were so good I would gladly have paid much more for my tickets. The Civil Wars make great music, no doubt about that, but they are one of those duos you can't miss live if you even like their record a little bit. Do yourself a favor and go out of your way to see them (my wife and I drove four hours round trip for this show, and would do it again in a heartbeat). Never have I witnessed such an intimate, entertaining and musically perfect performance as theirs. Plus, they are great together -- very funny and comfortable on stage.

The Ark in Ann Arbor is a small venue (400 people or so), on the second floor of a building on Main Street. For this show it was set up with chairs. A quiet, intimate setting perfect for the intimate, often quiet, powerful music of The Civil Wars. Joy and John Paul sounded incredible. The excitement, enthusiasm, and joy that they have in performing their music filled the rest of us lucky enough to be there. They played most of their new CD as well as Poison and Wine, and Tip of My Tongue from their EP. In the show, they included the covers: Disarm, You Are My Sunshine, Billie Jean, From This Valley. They also sang a new song, Oh Henry. If you have a chance to see them, run don't walk, they're the real deal, go and see them.

You have a fighting chance of seeing The Civil Wars in an intimate venue on their present tour. Do not miss the opportunity. This is as good a duet that has ever set foot on any stage anywhere. Their chemistry is perfect. There is a lot to chew on with the songs, and the two profess that everything that they have written together eclipses their individual efforts, but after you hear them sing "Billy Jean" or "I want you back" you will know, their interpretations are their rare gifts to us mere mortals. 2012 Best new artist Grammy # futurenewsflash

This concert was amazing, Joy has a voice that could tear you to pieces, and John was just unforgettable. Most defiantly will go to any and every show The Civil Wars play in my area, best show I've ever seen at The Ark. Had to sit in the very back because the show was sold out, but the venue was so small I could still see and hear perfectly. The chemistry John Paul White and Joy Williams have on stage with each other and with the audience is amazing! Their harmonies and heartfelt lyrics are more powerful in concert than sitting in your living room or singing along in your car. To hear the artists recreate the music and create new moments in the songs with others who appreciate such talent will move you. After listening to them on YouTube and iTunes for almost a year, we finally got to see them live. It is rare when you hear a band live that sounds even better than they do recorded. This was definitely the case with The Civil Wars. We also saw country legend Marty Stuart there taking it all in. Pretty interesting, being that it was in Boston, and of course nobody recognized him. Overall, it was an amazing time. No beer at Cafe 939 at Berklee though.

The Civil Wars are a phenomenal duo. Their voices blend together perfectly in notes that sound ethereal. However, I found that I could not look at Joy Williams because she had her hands fluttering and floating around more than Napoleon Dynamite doing sign language. It was overly dramatic and distracted from her nearly flawless voice. That being said, if you have a chance to see this group, go, but be prepared to avert your eyes from the crazy hands.

The entire evening was amazing starting with the opening band. The Staves complimented the headliner perfectly. If any type of crowd could appreciate The Staves' style of music, it would be fans of The Civil Wars. Joy Williams and John Paul White have so much chemistry on stage, if I were either of their spouses I'd be so jealous. The band loves what they do and it shows. This is the second time I have seen The Civil Wars perform and I will keep coming back. First of all, the show itself was great. Milo Greene and The Civil Wars were great. The acoustics of the theater were perfect and it's just a beautiful venue to see a show. The only drawback...we somehow managed to be behind the tallest person in the place. The entire show I had to lean to one side of his head or the other to be able to see, depending on how often he leaned over to talk to his girlfriend. I'm not sure what the solution is, but I wish the really tall people would consider taking seats in the back row or off to one of the sides so that regular folks could see. I had a cramp in my neck after the show and since it was sold out, didn't have the option to move.

It began with a fantastic opening act: The Bellows, so passionate and powerful and divine, just a sheer pleasure to experience. Then came Joy & John, just magic on stage. The sold-out crowd was mesmerized from start to finish. Stone quiet as John & Joy stepped away from the mic so Joy could stretch her voice to depths unimaginable by most, and the strings accompanying her were played flawlessly and yet somehow gritty by John. Whenever a song reached its conclusion, the crowd roared, literally, not a simple cheer, but a loud, mind-melting shout of applause at the beauty everyone had just been privileged to behold. This was by far one of, if not THE, best live shows I have ever had the honor of attending. If you enjoy live music, The Civil Wars are a MUST.

The Civil Wars have forever changed my expectations of a live performance. Pitch perfect harmonies, spark-flying chemistry and genuine interaction with the audience made it a night to remember. Looking forward to seeing then again.

The BEST acoustic show I have ever seen! Joy Williams' voice is an instrument itself. Their harmony is beyond perfect. I highly recommend this show!!!!!

I absolutely loved the concert for The Civil Wars!!! I would see them again and highly recommend them to anyone. Their music is fresh and compelling and the chemistry of Joy Williams and John Paul White together is just plain fun. I discovered them by pure accident and was lucky enough to catch them passing through Florida.

Civil Wars were great. Vocals were spot on. What you hear on their recordings is exactly what you hear live. No studio magic needed for their vocals. Our first time at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. It's a great small venue. I will be on the look out for upcoming events to attend there.

This is the third time that I've seen The Civil Wars and I still can't get enough. I would follow them anywhere if I could afford it. I will say that the Dallas crowd was not as lively and participating as much as Tulsa and KC.

Beautiful music! Great sense of humor. Surprised to hear "Barton Hallow" in the middle of the set. Really enjoyed their cover of "Billie Jean." The opening act (The Staves) were a pleasant surprise. Gotta get more of their music.

I could watch them perform and listen to their magical music all day long. Their voices, their chemistry, their personalities are great. Their entertainment is so good that they don't need lots of production or lots of instruments to accompany them. Cannot wait to see them again. Come back to Dallas any time.

There are no words to describe how good this duo is. Listening to their live show you are aware that what you are hearing is ground breaking. But it's not just that it's new, it's knowing that this is music we'll be talking about decades from now. Stupid good!

Overall it was a great performance. They are talented. Would have been an even better show had the venue been a bit more quaint. Still a fabulous show. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5. Really wanted to hear them play 'You Are My Sunshine"... only disappointment for the evening, if i have to give one.

The Civil Wars are awesome in concert. It's amazing how the sound of just their voices seems so like so much more than 2 voices.

The Civil Wars are one of the best duets that i've ever seen perform live. Their interactions with the audience and each other were a huge selling point for me, even though i didn't need more than their wonderful music. Joy Williams has a sweet and playful demeanor on stage. John Paul White's stong voice harmonizes well with Joy's flowing voice and combines to make a captivating presence in the room; there was barely a breath to be heard in room other than the music coming from the stage, at points. Their humble reactions to the roaring applause from the packed room at The Phoenix was sincere and heart warming. These two deserve a great deal of success and recognition in the music world. I hope to see them again someday soon. The Phoenix is a fantastic venue for smaller, more intimate shows such as this. The staff was friendly. There didn't seem to be a bad view of the stage in the house. I will most definitely be returning for a show in the future. Milo Green is a band that is sure be big, very soon. They're a fun, exteremly competent group of musicians that I can't wait to see again.

The opening band, Milo Greene, was fantastic. They were as good as the Civil Wars, who were (as predicted) amazing! Best concert I've ever been to.

these two were gift wrapped and sent straight to the world by the music gods themselves. i knew they were fantastic... live or not. but i was still taken aback by how truly talented they are. Joy's voice is incomparable. absolutely astounding. it was quite the emotional experience for me. i found myself with tears streaming down my face on several accounts. this is what music is all about. raw. real. no sound altering. just pure, true, god gifted talent.

This was the second time I have seen them live in the last year. Each time they have put on an amazing live show, making you wish it was not over at the end. The blend between Joy and John Paul is amazing and their voices definitely belong together.
