The Sons of the Pioneers

The Sons of the Pioneers

The Sons of the Pioneers have been around for a long time, and they bring a heaping helping of history and tradition to every stage they grace with their time-honored sound. At their nostalgic live shows the dozen or so members conjure up the sounds of the great American West as if not a day had passed, nailing their multi-part harmonies with the effortless ease and style of the legendary cowboys they sing about. Taking the stage in black jeans and Stetson hats, the Sons deliver tried and true classics like “Cool Water” and “Tumbling Tumbleweeds” with the same authentic twang that has been the group’s signature for the past 80 years...

First I want to say that Mel Tillis is beyond amazing! His unique blend of comedy, story telling and great music is what has earned him such a legendary status as well as a spot in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Mel sings just as great at 79 as he did at 39! I was suprised at his energy level, he ran around on the stage and performed a lot of physical comedy. He also met with fans before and after the show, posed for pictures and signed autographs. He didn't rush anyone and spent a lot of time with the people. He is a very kind man who truly cares about his fans. What TRULY suprised me was that a long while ago I had sent Mel Tillis a CD that I myself had recorded and wrote him a letter about how much I loved traditional Country music. I didn't say a word- he recognized me from the picture on my CD! He said "I know I know y-y-y-you from somewhere"! He then asked "didn't you write to me and send me a CD"? I said yes and he proceeded to tell me how much he enjoyed my CD and made wonderful comments about my singing. At first I thought he was just being polite but then he rattled off every single song I did on the CD!!! What a kind man. I was in awe of him to say the least! If you like traditional country music, go see Mel Tillis- You WILL NOT be dissapointed! All of this being said- The concert itself was BEYOND amazing and Mel is a truly talented man beyond belief, BUT- I must say the the VENUE itself was HORRIBLE. The Wheeling Showroom was cramped. It was over 1000 metal chairs cramped into a room that should only hold 500. It was hot and uncomfortable. Also, the floor had no incline so all the seats were on a flat surface at the same level. If a tall person sat in front of you you were screwed. I myself am tall (6'4") and I felt bad so I sat crouched down in a horribly uncomfortable position so the people behind me could see. I gave the concert 5 stars because it truly was one of the best performances I have ever seen, but if I were asked to rate the venue itself there wouldn't be a rating low enough. It was HORRIBLE. Also they were strict about the time limit and even Mel Tillis made a comment about that. His great show made up for the showrooms horrible conditions! It was so good that it made you forget how uncomfortable you were!

I have been to many many Steve Wariner concerts in the past 30 years but this one was amazing!! His energy level was great! He was really ready for a show, he played the audience wonderfully and everyone responded. I was very impressed given the fact that Wariner had recently lost his mother to a battle with cancer and this was one of the first shows he had done since such a family tragedy, but he was on top of his game. He played his older hits as well as his newer songs from his tribute to Chet Atkins and added in some Dotty West and Bob Lumen as well. The opening act, newcomer Matt Dame, started everything off on a high note. The audience was truly impressed with his songwriting and performance!

It's been 49 years since I first heard Sergio Mendes with Brasil '66....and the tunes are still top notch! Sergio's sounds speak for themselves. But being the musical genius he is, he knew to update the tunes. Infusing funky/sexy saxophones, and adding some hip-hop here & there, he made the tunes more modern, while still holding on to the conga beats. I've been a fan since the 6th grade, when I would watch them on Shindig & Hullaballo. Easy to say...I'm a fan for life!!!

Christine's show are always wonderful and entertaining. The groups she brings along never cease to please us with new and different material! Having Tom Paxton make an appearance was more than we expected. I sure hope she's feeling better after that awful kidney stone incident!

What an incredible show. Backed by an excellent band, Buffy's talent and energy are impressive. She performed songs from many eras, from albums of the late 60s to recent tunes. She is a multi-instrumentalist and I loved seeing a woman play electric guitar, as well as mouth bow, keyboards and guitar. Buffy can't hit the high notes anymore but her voice is still powerful. I was amazed to learn on our way home that she is 76. She sang, played, and danced with high energy and passion and it was a wonderful show.

One of the best musical experiences I have ever had. The musicians were amazing and the crowd really got into the spirit. A wonderful mixture of songs, spoken words and visuals.

Excellent mix of old and recent material, with lots of older faves. Geoffrey said from the stage the venue was like "visual headphones." Great sound, every seat was fantastic. One very toasted interloper strolled onto the stage during The Old Sod and sadly, didn't know a single word. Security tried to remove her, but the band let her stay. Unfortunately, she didn't know when to leave. Thank God they cut her mike. After the show the band came out to chat and sign autographs. It was an absolute delight to meet them, get the CD and setlist signed (Thank you Buffalo WILCO fan for giving that to me!) and take some pictures. It was a magical night.
